Meet James!

Were excited to introduce James your new Lampeter Campus President for this academic year! James is here to represent your interests, needs and support you throughout your time at university. We’ve come up with some ice-breaker questions for James to help you get to know your Campus President a little better.

Q. Hi James, introduction time! Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is James, and I am your Lampeter Campus President for the 2021/22 academic year! I’m really excited to get to know everyone here and to best represent you, so let’s start with some fun things about me to introduce myself:

  • I have every Beano comic from 1954-2000
  • I love quizzes
  • As a result, I won £10,000 on a gameshow

Q. Last year student voted and elected you as campus president. Congrats! Can you explain to new students what a president does?

In short, a Student’s Union president is the first port of call for you, the students, to raise concerns about most anything. It’s then my job to help point you in the right way in terms of where to go, who to talk to and what to say to ensure the best possible outcome for you.

Q. Can you run us through your top priorities for this year?

I have several priorities, including but not limited to:

  • Campaigning for the university to improve the disability accessibility on the campus (especially with the 200th anniversary coming up)
  • Preserving and maintaining any societies in preparation for potential ease of COVID restrictions
  • Continuing the fantastic sustainability programmes of my predecessors
  • Campaign to improve living conditions in halls

Q. Welcome Week is coming up! What events are you most looking forward to?

As stated, I love a good quiz, so the Quiz that I’ve written is one I really am looking forward to (no biases). Other than that, we have a Carnival, a Freshers Ball and a Birthday Party for anyone and everyone who celebrated their birthday in lockdown and thus couldn’t celebrate. It’s going to be a great week!

Q. Do you have any advice for new students?

Sports and societies are so beneficial for students who attend them. If you get the chance this year, sign up for something you’re interested in or even try and start your own. It helps you connect with like-minded people and thrive! Other than that, just get involved in the SU activities and campaigns. We do our best to ensure the best possible representation for you, and your involvement is paramount to us doing that!

Q. What did your involvement with the SU look like before you became President?

I’ve had my fair share of involvement with the SU before my presidency, mainly manifesting as a two-year stint as a part-time Officer. Namely the societies officer where I helped oversee internal elections and any complaints that people in those societies may have had. Being a part-time Officer also gave me a first-hand look into how mandates in the Union are made, as I was able to vote on the Big Ideas that students brought forward. Also, I helped drive the minibus for trips every now and then.

Q. How can students get in touch with you or follow your work this year?

I’m in my office most days from 9am-5pm, and if I’m not, then email me at james.barrow@uwtsd.ac.uk or shoot me a message on my work Facebook James Lampeter Pres or on Twitter @UWTSDSULampPres.

Thank you, James, for taking part in our Q&A. If you have any other questions for James or want to know more about your Campus President, then make sure to book a place at our Meet & Greet event here!
