Voting guide blog

If someone was going to represent you - wouldn't you want to have a say in who that person is? Every student can vote in our student elections. And by choosing to vote, you help pick the people who represent you - and your interests - to the SU, the uni, NUS, and even the Government.

We can't make you vote - but we 110% think you should. It's quick and easy - and our elections use the single transferable voting system. This means you can rank candidates rather than just picking one.

Video How-to: Single Transferable Voting

Our elections use the single transferable voting system. You rank candidates according to your preference - you can rank as many (or as few) candidates as you want for a position.

And if no one is right in your opinion, you can spoil your ballot or vote to re-open nominations (RON).

To get elected, a candidate must meet the quota. This is calculated by taking the total number of votes and then dividing it by the total number of seats plus one, and adding one.

((Total Votes / Total Seats + 1) + 1)

Examples

  • 600 votes for a role with one opening, the quota would be 301
    =((600 / 2) + 1)
  • 600 votes for a role with three openings, the quota would be 151
    =((600 / 4) + 1)

Voting is done in rounds. If no one reaches the quota in the first round, the candidate with the lowest number of votes is eliminated, and their votes are shared between the remaining candidates based on the voters' preference.

And this is repeated until a winner is declared.

Your Voting Link

On the first day of voting, we send everyone an email with a unique voting link - do not share it with anyone else!

You can also vote by going to the online voting platform at uwtsdunion.co.uk/vote and signing in with your student ID.

Email us at elections@uwtsd.ac.uk if you haven't received your link or have technical issues.

Happy Voting 💜
